People in amateur radio — edited Aug 31, 2026 by Unknown editor

Amateur radio is full of names used as shorthand — the Maxim in W1AW's story, the Vail in NARA's
youth CW award, the callsign on a club's QSL card. This section explains who they were.

- [Alfred Vail](/wiki/people/alfred-vail) — built the instruments and shaped the code that made the
telegraph work, and the namesake of NARA's [20-20 Young Keyers Award](/wiki/contests-and-awards/nara-awards).
- [The founders](/wiki/people/founders) — Hiram Percy Maxim, Clarence Tuska and the organizers who
turned scattered experimenters into a represented service.
- [Notable operators](/wiki/people/notable-operators) — astronauts, a king, a senator and a
guitarist, and why the callsigns matter.
- [Women in amateur radio](/wiki/people/women-in-amateur-radio) — licensed since the earliest days,
and still under-counted.

## The names you will hear on the air

You will also run into people who are famous only inside the hobby: the club president who has run
the same net for thirty years, the operator who taught half your county to copy code, the person who
answers every newcomer's question without making them feel stupid. Amateur radio runs on those
people, and almost none of them are written up anywhere.
