A net is a scheduled contact between multiple stations, run by a net control station (NCS). Almost every club runs a weekly net, and checking into one is the least intimidating way to make a first contact — the format tells you exactly what to say.
Types
- Rag chew / social nets — informal, and specifically welcoming to new operators.
- Traffic nets — pass formal written messages; see
- Emergency and training nets — ARES/RACES groups drill weekly.
- Technical and special-interest nets — antennas, digital modes, youth, DX alerts.
How to check in
When net control asks for check-ins, wait for the category that applies to you, then give your call sign phonetically, once. When acknowledged: "KX4XYZ, Sam in Chattanooga, no traffic, listening."
"No traffic" simply means you have nothing to pass. If it is your first time, say so — you will get a warm reception and probably three offers of help.
