Kits and homebrewing

Building your own gear — where to start, what to buy, and how not to burn yourself.

Amateur radio is one of the last services where you may legally design, build and put your own transmitter on the air. Building is also the cheapest way to understand what the manuals are talking about.

Start with a kit

Kits give you a known-good design and a parts list, so a failure is your soldering rather than your maths. Reasonable progressions:

  1. A code-practice oscillator, keyer or antenna analyser adapter — an evening's work.
  2. A QRP transceiver: the QCX-series CW rigs, Pixie or Rockmite for a few dollars, uBITX or
  3. (tr)uSDX for a multiband SSB radio.

  4. An antenna tuner, balun, common-mode choke or dummy load — all more useful than they look.
  5. A signal generator, noise bridge or NanoVNA-based test setup for the bench.

Tools worth owning

A temperature-controlled soldering iron (not a fixed 30 W pencil), decent 63/37 or lead-free solder, flux, side cutters, a multimeter, and eventually a NanoVNA and a cheap oscilloscope. Surface-mount work needs hot air, tweezers and magnification, but is far less scary than it looks.

Homebrew from scratch

  • Start from a published, tested design — the ARRL Handbook, QRP club journals, and countless
  • personal sites carry them.

  • Simulate first: LTspice for circuits, EZNEC or 4nec2 for antennas, KiCad for boards. See
  • software.

  • Build on copper-clad board ("ugly" or Manhattan style) before committing to a PCB.
  • Test into a dummy load, and check for harmonics and spurious emissions before you transmit —
  • §97.307 spectral purity requirements apply to gear you built yourself.

Safety

  • Tube gear and amplifier power supplies hold lethal voltages after switch-off. Bleed resistors
  • fail. One hand in a pocket, and never work alone on high-voltage equipment.

  • Solder fumes are flux, not lead — but ventilate anyway, and wash your hands.
  • Lithium batteries need the right charger and a fireproof place to charge; see
  • power and batteries.

  • Antenna work is the most dangerous thing most amateurs do. Nothing goes up near a power line, and
  • towers get harnesses and a second person — see grounding and lightning.
