macOS covers the essentials well. What you give up is contest logging depth and a handful of Windows-only manufacturer tools; both are solvable with a virtual machine.
Logging
- MacLoggerDX — the mainstream commercial Mac logger: rig control, cluster, maps, LoTW.
- RUMlogNG — free, well maintained, excellent for DX and award chasing.
- Aether, Skookum Logger (contests, CW), HAMRS — lighter options.
- CQRLOG and Klog can be built or run in a container if you want the Linux tools.
Digital modes
- WSJT-X and JTDX — native builds, no drama.
- GridTracker — native.
- fldigi — native build, occasionally lagging the Windows release.
- MMSSTV has no Mac version; use MultiScan 3B or QSSTV in a container for
- Pat — the cross-platform Winlink client, since
SSTV.
Winlink Express is Windows-only. Note that VARA modems are Windows software; Mac users typically run ARDOP or Packet, or run VARA in a VM.
Programming and control
- CHIRP — runs natively; needs a working USB serial driver.
- Hamlib and rigctld — install through Homebrew:
brew install hamlib. - Manufacturer programming software is almost all Windows. Keep a small Windows VM
(UTM, Parallels or VMware Fusion) for CHIRP-unsupported radios and for VARA.
SDR
- GQRX, SDR++, CubicSDR, SDRangel — all build or ship for macOS, including Apple
- GNU Radio via Homebrew or MacPorts.

Practical macOS notes
- Serial drivers. Recent macOS includes drivers for FTDI and CP210x devices, but many cheap
- Apple silicon. Nearly everything is native or runs under Rosetta 2; check for an arm64 build
- Permissions. Grant microphone access to WSJT-X and fldigi (System Settings → Privacy &
