If the nearest exam session is two hours away, your area is losing new operators. Fixing that takes three accredited Volunteer Examiners and a room.
What you need
- Three VEs of appropriate class, accredited by the same VEC for that session
- A quiet room with tables, separate from the waiting area
- Exam materials from the VEC (paper) or laptops and reliable internet (electronic)
- A published schedule, listed on hamstudy.org/sessions and the
ARRL finder so candidates can actually find you
Running the session
Verify photo ID and FRN, collect the fee, administer, grade on the spot with two VEs checking each paper, issue the CSCE, and file with the VEC the same day. Candidates who pass may attempt the next class immediately.
Making it work locally
- Pair sessions with the end of a licence class, so students test while the material is fresh.
- Run one at every hamfest and club open house.
- Publish the schedule a year ahead, and keep it even when only one candidate registers — that one
- Offer remote/video sessions if your VEC supports them; they cost nothing but a scheduled evening.
