If a piece of amateur software exists, it runs on Windows. This is the path of least resistance, particularly for contest logging and manufacturer programming tools.

- N1MM+ — the contest logger. Free, enormous, Windows only. Nothing else is close for serious
- N3FJP suite — friendly general and contest logs; a paid bundle, popular with clubs and Field
- Log4OM 2 — free, full-featured general logging with cluster, LoTW, eQSL and Club Log.
- DXKeeper / DXLab Suite — free, modular, deeply capable, dated interface.
- Ham Radio Deluxe — commercial all-in-one (logging, rig control, digital); functional, but
- HAMRS — light POTA/SOTA logging, good on a Windows tablet.

- CHIRP — free, programs most handhelds. Install the drivers for your cable first.
- RT Systems — paid, per-radio, includes a known-good cable. Worth it if CHIRP does not support
- Manufacturer tools: Icom CS-series, Yaesu ADMS, Kenwood MCP. Free downloads, one per model.
- Hamlib for CAT control, or flrig / Omni-Rig as the intermediary between programs.

Practical Windows notes
- Fix the clock. The built-in time service is not accurate enough for FT8 under load. Use
- USB serial drivers. Counterfeit Prolific PL2303 chips fail on modern drivers — the classic
- Turn off USB selective suspend and any power management on the radio's USB port, or transmissions
- Exclude your log and WSJT-X directories from real-time antivirus scanning; scanners routinely
- Windows 11's sound "enhancements" mangle transmit audio. Disable them on the radio's audio device
