Nothing else in the station makes as much difference. A resonant antenna in the clear, as high as you can manage, beats every accessory you can buy.

Three principles carry most of the practical decisions:

Height matters more than gain for HF, and enormously for VHF.
Clear space matters more than length. A short antenna in the open often beats a full-size one

inside metal gutters.

Efficiency beats matching. A tuner that gives you 1:1 SWR into a lossy system has hidden the

problem, not solved it.

If covenants or a landlord rule out anything visible, start with HOA, apartment and stealth antennas. Whatever you put up, what connects it to the radio matters too — see coax, connectors and chokes.
